In January 2021 The Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy approached London Filmed and asked for help in facilitating their first-ever virtual conference. The event has been held annually every year since 2009. The summit is sponsored by a coalition of 25 human rights NGOs and is widely praised by the international human rights community. The aim of the conference is to bring together human rights activists from around the world, to share their stories and to plan action strategies. Coronavirus has only further shined a light on brutal regimes around the world and so it was of the utmost importance to hold the summit again this year. Filmed across 6 locations around the globe the summit would be the most challenging one to date. The event was hosted by Hillel Neuer and featured Human rights heroes, activists and former political prisoners from China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Venezuela and other countries.

Because of the Coronavirus pandemic and other restrictions many speakers would be unable to travel to pre-record this summit. We used our global network to source production companies that could help us facilitate this event. The main bulk of the filming would take place in the UK and the US. Other studios in Germany, New York, Belarus and Israel would be brought in remotely or film speakers in isolation. For the remote panel in Washington we brought in Nathan Law from London and Can Dündar from Germany. In order to make sure all the lighting, camera settings and style was the same across all studios, we created a detailed set of shooting guidelines and briefed each production company thoroughly before the shoot day.

  • Challenges

    • Create an opening film that captures the tone and feel of the event.
    • Filming in 6 locations across the world.
    • Pre-recording a panel discussion using speakers from across the world in three different studios.
    • Handling very sensitive and powerful topics respectfully. Making sure to give a voice to the voiceless and to amplify the powerful message the speakers were sharing.
  • Solutions

    • External project management tools to allow open communication between different parties and productions.
    • Dedicated team of 5 made up of a Project Manager, Animator, Creative Director, Lead Editor and the Head of Production.
    • The use of our wide-ranging production network to draw on the expertise of production companies based in Washington, Berlin, New York, Belarus, Israel and London.
    • Using Remote filming to capture activists in Australia and Cuba.
    • Spending time understanding and learning the stories of the activists. The team spoke to the great staff at The Geneva Summit to gain insight into how we could best empower the speakers at the event.
  • Result

London Filmed delivered a slick, pre-record virtual conference that went off without a hitch and helped give a voice to some of the most important issues affecting the world today.
